There are 5 pre-defined types of deviations in INOSA:

| Incident | Something that has happened and has both a real consequence and a potenisal consequence |
| Near miss | Something that almost happened and only have a potensial consequence |
| Condition | Something that could happen and have a potensial consequence |
| Improvement proposal | Something that can be improved - have a potensial consequence |
| Revision | Deviaton discovered from a revision or audit |
